The Great Plains Theatre Foundation is pleased to announce that it has acquired the theatre building located at 300 North Mulberry in Abilene, Kansas from the Tietjens Foundation. Terms of the purchase are not being released.
The Great Plains Theatre has operated in this building since 1995. The building is the former home of the First Presbyterian Church and was built in 1876. Six productions utilizing equity actors are presented each year, Live Literature is attended by over 4000 children and several other events are held on an annual basis.
Monte Dibben, President of the Great Plains Theatre Board of Directors states; “We are pleased to be able to make this building acquisition and to secure this facility for the Great Plains Theatre for many years to come. Over the last 15 years the theatre has become a very important part of Abilene and the entire north central Kansas area. We are proud of our past accomplishments and are excited about the future.”
Marc Liby, Executive Director of the Great Plains Theatre states; “We have many plans for the more full utilization of this fine building. These plans include the offering of additional shows, offering tours to the public, live music performances, utilizing the building for public meetings and wedding receptions, and to potentially show movies on a giant screen very soon.”
Astra Bank played a significant role in making this acquisition possible and the Board of Directors thank Astra Bank for their assistance.
The Great Plains Theatre is currently presenting “Quilters” which will run through August 31st. Later this fall the theatre will present “Barefoot in the Park” and “Christmas My Way, a Tribute to Frank Sinatra”. Tickets are available at the theatre box office or by phone at 888-222-4574.
