The GPTF staff have been holding auditions in Abilene and out-of-town. This is one of the most exhausting, yet enjoyable, part of the theatre’s yearly activities. Auditors from most any theatre will tell you that they love seeing new faces, new talents and the fresh ideas which come with the audition process. Auditors must be attentive and focus as actors appear one after another, usually in five minute increments, with picture and resume in hand. In those five minutes actors are expected to showcase their talents, style, singing ability, stage presence and personality.
During each actor’s audition the theatre staff makes notes, evaluates the performance and considers what roles this person might be right for in the current season. They also mentally file the information and impressions away for future reference. When the next actor comes in, the process begins again. A challenging situation for everyone involved.
For an actor an audition can be a nerve-racking experience. However, they are a necessary evil in the casting process, a process which requires time, energy, focus on the part of everyone concerned. There will always be disappointment, unfortunately for most of the actors. A limited number of roles are available to be filled from a great number of hopefuls. But, no audition is wasted time. They can be a great learning experience for actors and an opportunity to perform, showcase themselves, even if only for five minutes.
